Pet urine is one of the most stubborn odours to remove at home. If it’s not cleaned properly, your dog or cat may keep returning to the same spot. Pets have a much stronger sense of smell than we do and often use urine to mark territory or repeat toileting in the same area.
Even if you can’t smell it anymore, your pet probably can. To stop repeat accidents, you need the right method and the right products.
Why Regular Cleaners Don’t Work
Many standard cleaning products leave a scent that smells “clean” to us but can still smell like a toilet area to pets. Regular cleaners also fail to break down uric acid crystals, which is why pet urine odour lingers and attracts your dog or cat back to the same spot.
This is why scrubbing with ordinary products rarely solves the problem.
The Best Way to Remove Pet Urine Smell
Use an enzyme-based cleaner. These products contain bio-enzymes that break down uric acid at a molecular level, removing both the odour and the scent markers pets use.
Choose a pet-specific enzyme cleaner. Many are biodegradable and designed to be safe when used as directed. They typically leave no heavy fragrance behind, which helps prevent remarking.
Recommended Products
Urine Off®, Urine Free®, Piss Off® – Pet-specific enzyme cleaners available in pet stores or online.
Biozet Attack® Laundry Detergent – Enzyme laundry powder from supermarkets, ideal for washing soiled bedding, mats or towels.
Tip: Avoid products containing ammonia or strong fragrance, as these can smell like urine to pets and encourage remarking.
Step-by-Step: How to Clean Pet Urine
-
Avoid Using Regular Cleaners First
If you’ve already used a chemical cleaner, rinse the area well with water and let it dry before applying enzymes. Residue can stop the enzymes working properly.
-
Test for Colourfastness
Always test enzyme cleaners on a hidden patch of carpet, fabric or upholstery first.
-
Apply Generously
Shake well and soak the area thoroughly. Make sure the cleaner reaches all layers the urine may have soaked into, such as underlay, grout or cracks between floorboards.
-
Keep it Wet
Enzymes need moisture to work. Cover the area with cling wrap or a damp towel to keep it damp, especially on hot days or hard floors.
-
Give it Time
Follow the dwell time on the label. For older or strong-smelling stains, several treatments may be needed. It’s normal for the smell to get stronger at first as the enzymes break the urine down.
-
Blot, Don’t Scrub
Blot with paper towel or a clean cloth to lift dissolved residues. Avoid harsh scrubbing, which can damage fibres.
-
Use a UV Light for Hidden Spots
A UV urine detector helps find invisible stains, especially on carpet or fabric.
