Winter Pet Care Tips for Sunshine Coast Pets

How to Keep Your Dog or Cat Comfortable This Winter

Even though our Sunshine Coast winters are mild by national standards, the cooler temperatures can still cause discomfort for many pets—especially senior dogs and cats, short‑haired breeds, and pets with arthritis or other age‑related issues.

If you’re feeling the cold, chances are your pet is too. Here’s what to look for and how you can help them stay cosy and healthy this season.

🐾 Is Your Pet Slowing Down This Winter?

Just like us, pets with arthritis can feel stiffer and more uncomfortable when the temperature drops. Arthritis involves the gradual breakdown of cartilage and joint fluid, leading to pain, inflammation and reduced mobility. This is part of normal ageing for many pets but can also follow injury or joint disease.

Signs your pet may have arthritis:

  • Stiffness or hesitation when rising
  • Licking or chewing at joints or limbs
  • Reduced willingness to play or jump
  • Favouring a limb or limping
  • Difficulty with stairs
  • Decreased stamina on walks
  • Changes in behaviour or sleep patterns

If your dog or cat is showing any of these signs, a vet check is strongly recommended. The good news is, there’s a wide range of options available to help—from natural supplements and nutraceuticals, to prescription medications and supportive lifestyle changes.

"I didn’t realise how much the cold was affecting Ruby until Dr Terri pointed out her subtle signs of arthritis. With her new supplements and some simple bedding changes, she’s moving more easily and seems so much more comfortable."

🛏️ Bedding & Warmth: How to Keep Pets Cosy

It’s important to keep your pet’s bed off the cold floor, out of draughty areas, and well‑padded. A few quick tips:

  • Add a thick blanket or doona
  • Use a bed with raised sides for warmth
  • Try a heating pad (especially for cats) – choose one with safety controls or reflective warming layers

If your pet sleeps outside, provide a kennel with a raised floor, warm bedding, and place it under shelter from wind and rain.

Note: Always supervise pets that chew bedding or coats, as ingestion can be dangerous.

🧥 Do Pets Need Coats in Queensland?

Surprisingly—yes, some do! Older pets, puppies, and short‑haired breeds often struggle to regulate body temperature. Many dogs benefit from wearing a coat overnight, especially indoors on hard floors or outside in kennels.

  • Not all pets need coats 24/7
  • Avoid overheating or chafing
  • Check underneath regularly to avoid matting or skin issues

💧 Don’t Forget Hydration

Cold weather often means pets drink less. Try these tips:

  • Add water to meals
  • Offer wet food
  • Provide extra water bowls inside and out

🌤️ Sunlight and Mood

Grey, cold days can impact mood and energy—just like in people.

  • Dogs still need daily walks or time outside when the sun is out
  • Cats love warm windowsills—ensure they have access to sunny spots indoors
